"I said goodbye to my old combination finisher recently after 15 years of service, although when I bought it from Standard 15 years ago for the princely sum of £500 "sold as seen" it was already some years older. That old machine had helped to generate around £750.000 worth of business in the meantime, not bad for an old timer. So, the idea of spending somewhere near £10k on a replacement was a somewhat frightening but exciting prospect.
I was impressed when I first saw the model 720 finisher at the factory, but still needed time to convince myself of the benefits, but eventually ordered and received the machine in July. So what makes this special ?
In the orthopaedic shoe industry space and flexibility are paramount, and this just about has it all. The three trimmer heads saves swapping and changing endlessly for different jobs, and the main scouring bands feel really solid and balanced with plenty of space between them. The carousel style pads and brushes saves acres of space too, and the additional bottom scourer gives me every option on the finishing routines. Powerful twin speed motors and extraction fan too, even at my single phase option. This makes for an impressive machine and easily the best of all those I had considered for the job.
I received some help purchasing the machine in the form of a grant from the East Midlands Development Agency and their "Leader" funding, 40% of the cost of the machine plus funding which helped my move to Derbyshire, but my business still has to generate extra turnover to have warranted the outlay. Business is good at the moment with some minor expansion so hopefully the new 720 will give the same long term returns as my old trusted machine.
